The degree
apprenticeship

Overview
The four-year engineering programme is a degree apprenticeship. It combines an academic degree and work-based learning. For our programme, you spend 40% of your time per week on off-the-job study, with two study days a week during term time. You will pursue the Level 6 Design and Development Engineer apprenticeship standard alongside the BEng (Hons) Engineering degree.
Apprenticeship standard
We have chosen the Level 6 Product Design and Development Engineer apprenticeship standard, as the content of this qualification best reflects the academic content of the degree programme:
- Mathematics and science for engineers
- Materials and manufacture
- Mechanical, electrical and electronic principles and applications
- Statics and dynamics
- How to undertake and apply business-led projects
- Engineering operations and business management
- Applying advanced technology techniques
While the apprenticeship standard is Level 6 Design and Development Engineer, the degree is not design engineering focused.
After successfully completing your BEng (Hons) Engineering degree, you’ll be entered for End Point Assessment (EPA). You’ll have maintained a record of the skills and knowledge you developed during your apprenticeship training period, throughout the four years. This will showcase your occupational competence in the workplace.
The EPA consists of a Case Study Presentation and a professional discussion with an independent End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO). The assessment is graded and you’re required to achieve a minimum of ‘Pass’ in both components in order to successfully complete your Degree Apprenticeship Programme.
Our highly experienced team will support and guide you through the process of identifying suitable evidence to showcase your occupational competence and help you prepare for EPA.
EAL is the EPAO for the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology.
